The first monograph on the female painters, photographers, architects, sculptors, and designers of the vanguard Bauhaus School, who helped shape the cultural history of the twentieth century. Translated from the German edition, this volume chronicles the lives and careers of 20 women who were actively responsible for the renaissance in craft and design of the Bauhaus movement. The entry for each artist features images of their works in color and b&w plates as well as period photos of their cohorts, workshops, and residences. The biographies trace the lives and design theories of artists who overcame the pressure to conform to traditional women's roles, then managed to follow their fortunes, mainly from exile, once the Nazis destroyed the creative milieu they'd help to make. Among the artists surveyed are Anni Albers, Marianne Brandt, Ida Kerkovius, and Ilse Fehling.
